For solicitors and law firms

Use AI in your firm without breaking client confidence

Your fee earners already ask AI to summarise letters and tidy drafts. Saiela takes the client details out first, and gives you a record showing your firm handled it properly.

Built for UK firms, with the SRA's August 2026 warning notice in mind.

Where personal data slips into AI

It's rarely deliberate. It slips in when someone tidies a letter or summarises a file in a hurry.

  • Letters and attendance notes

Summarising a client's letter sends their name, address and matter number along with it.

  • Witness statements

Paste part of a witness statement into a free AI tool to tidy it up, and you've just handed evidence to a third party.

  • Medical and criminal records

A medical report in a personal injury case or details of a conviction are special category or criminal offence data under UK GDPR.

AI for law firms: what the SRA expects of you

In August 2026 the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) published a warning notice on the misuse of AI. It names confidential client information being entered into public AI tools as a risk to confidentiality and data protection.

In practice, that means three things for your firm: use business plans with a contract, keep client details out of public AI tools, and be able to show how AI is used. Saiela helps with all three.

Swap and restore

AI gets the task, never the client.

Saiela checks what you type into AI right there in the browser. Names and numbers are swapped out before anything is sent, then swapped back when the answer arrives, on your screen only.

What you type

Summarise this letter from James Okoro about his tenancy dispute at 22 Victoria Road.

What the AI receives

Summarise this letter from [PERSON_1] about his tenancy dispute at [ADDRESS_1].

Made-up example. These aren't real people.

Proof

When the SRA, a client or your insurer asks, you're ready

Sooner or later someone will ask how your firm uses AI. The answer is already written down.

  • A DPIA and records of processing that list your AI providers
  • An AI policy, shared with your team and signed by everyone
  • Staff AI lessons with examples from your own kind of work
  • A log of every AI use, never the content, and one report you can send

Questions

What solicitors ask about using AI safely.

Can solicitors use ChatGPT for client work?

Yes, if client information is protected. Use business plans with a contract and a data processing agreement, block free and personal accounts, and keep client details out of prompts. Saiela swaps them for placeholders before anything is sent.

How do we find out which AI tools our team is using?

Saiela shows you every AI tool used in the browser across your firm, including personal accounts and new tools as they appear. You choose which are approved for client work, which are allowed for work with no personal data, and which are blocked.

Does Saiela protect legal privilege?

Saiela's law pack recognises privileged advice markers, matter numbers and court case numbers, so they are caught before they reach an AI tool. That lowers the risk of disclosure. It doesn't decide questions of privilege for you.

Is the law pack included in Free?

No. Free includes UK detection, such as names, addresses, National Insurance numbers and bank details. The law pack is part of Team.

What should a law firm's AI policy cover?

Which AI tools are approved and for what, what must never be entered, how staff are trained and how use is checked. Saiela drafts an AI acceptable use policy from your settings and records who has acknowledged it.
